It's Sunday so that means two things: NFL football and game 2 of the ALDS. Last night the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox in game 1 in Boston for a 1-0 series lead. Anibal Sanchez, Al Alburquerque, Jose Veras, Drew Smyly, and Joaquin Benoit combined for a 1 hitter and took a no-hit bid into the bottom of the 9th. The final score was 1-0, just like game 2 of the Cardinals' series. It was the first time, if I remember the stat correctly, that two games ended 1-0 on the same day in LCS history. I could look it up, but I am not going to do that.
Game 2 is tonight as Max Scherzer vs. Clay Buchholz is what could be another pitcher's duel. So, do I watch the game or do I watch NFL football? It's like that old short story, The Lady or the Tiger. And if it's like that, then I guess I cannot tell you what I am going to choose.
It'll be both, just to give away the worthless secret. I will just flip back and forth. My New Orleans Saints play at 3:25 pm today and I am watching the Rams play now (Cardinals and Saints? No, I am not Catholic, but my teams have a theme, don't they?), so I will be watching both tonight with no real vested interest in either.
Having said that, I have reasons for wanting both Detroit and Boston to win. Assuming the Cardinals win their series (and that's a big assumption at this point, if you read my last blog entry) then both AL teams have a history with the Cardinals. The Cards beat Detroit in the 2006 World Series, a series that Bob Nightingale of USA today said the Tigers would win in 3 games. Of course, the Cards won in 5. A Cardinals-Tigers series would be good because even if the Cardinals lost, the Cards won in 2006, so as tough a WS loss would be, well we beat them already. Plus, there is the added bonus of the Cardinals playing a team that the Giants already beat for the 2nd time in a row. More specifically, in 2010 the San Francisco beat the Texas Rangers and the Cardinals beat the Rangers in 2011. Last season the Giants swept the tigers. So, it would be symmetrical, sort of. Now, because the Cards beat Detroit in 2006, there's no revenge story there. However...
Boston Red Sox beat the Cardinals in the 2004 World Series. In a sweep. A series loss that needs avenged like Inigo Montoya seeking revenge against the Six Fingered Man. The Cardinals need to get revenge, but, admittedly, just because that series still annoys me. Chris Carpenter (currently on the DL) and Yadier Molina (then a rookie) are the only remaining players from that season. Oh, and the Cardinals starting catcher that season? Mike Matheny who now manages the Cards. It's a different time, a different team (mostly, anyway, as I already stated), but it would still be nice to see the Cardinals beat the Red Sox in the WS.
New Orleans is about to start playing the New England Patriots (I hate that cheating ass team), so I am going to wrap this up with a simple:
GO SAINTS!!!
